Empowering Readers: The Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) at Glenfield Primary
At Glenfield Primary, we use the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA), a research and evidence-based, structured literacy program developed by University of Canterbury researchers for New Zealand children.
What is BSLA and Why is it Effective?
BSLA is a comprehensive approach for 5-7 year olds, rooted in the science of reading. It gives children the best start in reading, writing, and oral language through:
- Systematic Phonics: Clear, sequential teaching of letter-sound relationships.
- Phonological Awareness: Developing skills in hearing and manipulating sounds.
- Vocabulary & Oral Language: Expanding language through quality literature.
- Structured Reading & Writing: Applying skills in targeted small groups and explicit instruction.
The research behind BSLA is robust, showing it consistently accelerates early literacy skills across all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Studies confirm significant progress in foundational skills, particularly benefiting children with lower initial oral language and other barriers such as dyslexia. This program also empowers our teachers with the best practices in literacy instruction, fostering a love for reading and confident communication for your child.
